Earthquake Ecuador

Regarding upcoming requests and bookings for Ecuador: apart from the coastal area which is still affected all other regions including Guayaquil can be visited without any restrictions!

UPDATE April 25
The 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Ecuador on April 16th destroyed several towns and killed more than 650 people. many people remain missing, more than 16.000 are injured. Almost 25.000 people remain in shelters. Most of the deaths came from three towns in coastal Ecuador: Manta, Portoviejo and Pedernales. Many of our friends and partners in Ecuador lost their homes and live literally on the streets. Some lost their relatives during the earthquake.
The SAT team in Quito and their families are fine and none of our travelers to Ecuador has been affected.
In the past week we collected money, donated by SAT, our Ecuador staff, and from colleagues and friends all over the world. Our team in Quito will send food, medicine and drinking water to several families in Manta over the next two months, hoping that the situation there will improve soon. Our partner agent in Manta will receive the aid and deliver it every week to the families in need.
In addition to the aid organized by our local SAT Ecuador team we support the local organisation MINGAI (www.mingai.org), giving immediate help in the rural areas. This foundation was started by Felipe Jácome and Angelika von Foerster, Instructors of the NOLS- Wilderness Medicine Institute in Lander (NOLS-WMI), Wyoming, USA, affiliate of Landmark Learning, North Carolina (https://landmarklearning.edu). Felipe Jácome went shortly after the earthquake with a team of paramedics and physicians towards the disaster zone, mainly helping in the rural areas which urgently need assistance as the main aid is concentrated on the bigger towns.
