FLOODS in BRAZIL

Intense rainfall in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost region of Brazil bordering Uruguay and Argentina, has caused massive flooding across the region, leaving more than 100 people dead, thousands homeless and entire cities and farmland destroyed. Our hearts go out to those affected.

Although the airport in the capital, Porto Alegre, is closed to regular flights, there has been no disruption to the regular circuits we operate within Brazil as this area is not considered a major tourist destination. Our operations within Brazil are running normally.

There have also been heavy rains with flooding in some areas of Uruguay and Argentina, but this has not affected our operations as these areas are in remote destinations that are not part of our tourist circuits.

DENGUE FEVER

Dengue is spread to people through the bite of an infected mosquito, specifically the Aedes species (Ae. aegypti or Ae. albopictus).

Dengue is a viral infection that causes high fever, severe headache, muscle and joint pains, nausea, vomiting, swollen glands and rash. It has a low mortality rate.
There is an ongoing dengue risk in parts of South America, including Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Peru. This year, due to particularly hot temperatures and heavy summer rains, the spread of Dengue Fever increased in some part of South America.

Mainly affected are the tropical areas of Brazil, including the city of Rio de Janeiro. Districts such as the South Zone of Rio where the main hotels and sites are located, have fewer cases since these areas are monitored by the local authorities.

Also in Peru, unusually hot weather and heavy rains in some parts of the country, mostly in the jungle region, have led to an unusual increase in Dengue Fever. The regions affected our guests travel to, are mainly the Jungle Areas, parts of Lima and Callao, and the region of Ica. Note that in the jungle region especially, most cases are recorded in the bigger cities such as Puerto Maldonado and Iquitos where our passengers usually don’t stay – cases in or near the jungle lodges are almost unheard of.

Health authorities in Argentina have also reported elevated dengue fever activity, mainly in the capital Buenos Aires and the Andean province of Mendoza. Only the drier, colder region of Patagonia in southern Argentina hasn’t registered any cases in 2024.

In Uruguay the departments of Salto, Paysandú and Montevideo are mainly affected.

Visitors coming to these regions are requested to

  •  Dress in light clothing that covers the arms and legs.
  • Use insect repellents and reapply as directed
  • Bring insect repellent from home as local supplies are running low

Symptoms and Treatment:

  • Symptoms of dengue usually begin within 2 weeks after being bitten by an infected mosquito.
  • The most common symptoms of dengue include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, rash, muscle, and joint pain, and minor bleeding.
  • See a healthcare provider if you develop a fever or have symptoms  of dengue.
