Peru - Hike the Inca Trail

Arrival in Lima, the “city of kings”.

Culinary tour of Lima to highlight the secrets about Peru’s most famous dishes. Visit of a local market to learn about local products before learning to prepare ceviche and Pisco Sour. Lunch in a local restaurant (shared basis).

Flight to Cusco. Walking tour of the city of Cusco with a visit to the Cathedral, the main square Plaza de Armas and  Korikancha, the Sun Temple of the Incas.

Visit to some ruins around Cusco, e.g. Sacsayhuaman. The beauty and monumental scale of this magnificent Inca fortress does not fail to impress its visitors.

Transfer to the Sacred Valley for a River Rafting tour in the amazing landscape around Pachar River with class II and III rapids. Picnic lunch. Optional ride on the famed typical Peruvian “Paso Fino” horses to the city of Ollantaytambo.

Today the Inca Trail Adventure begins (shared basis), the unique 43km trek to Machu Picchu. Transfer to the starting point of the Inca Trail. Hike via Miskay and Llactapata to the community of Huayllabamba where the first camp is set up.

Arrival at the mountain pass Abra Warmihuanusca. Descend into the Pacaymayo valley while the landscape changes to cloud forest. The camp is set up after approx. 7h of hiking.

Climb to the second pass, Abra Runkurakay. Visit the circular ruin site of the same name and descend towards the Sayacmarca complex. Arrival at the third pass, Abra Phuyupatamarca and continue to the Inca complex Wiñaywayna, close to which the last camp is set up.

Early morning departure to Intipunku, the Sun Gate, for a first view of Machu Picchu when the sky is clear. Descend to the legendary Inca city for a guided tour of Machu Picchu. In the afternoon, return to Cusco by train and bus.

Flight to Puerto Maldonado. Transfer by bus and boat to Refugio Amazonas Lodge. Jungle hike with a local guide. Full board included during lodge stay.

Excursion program at the jungle lodge, including hikes and boat trips to explore the fauna and flora of the surrounding Peruvian Amazon. Activities might change according to where the best spots for animal sightings are located.

Transfer to the airport of Puerto Maldonado, flight to Lima for homebound flight.
